A quiet office in a residential Dubai neighbourhood

If Carrefour can deliver, why not you?

Demand is not the problem. Distance is.

I met a supermarket owner in Dubai. He runs a few stores across the city. We were sitting in his office in one of the biggest residential areas.

He told me his best store was dying. Not for lack of demand, the neighbourhood around him was full of families, but month after month, his sales were quietly declining.

He had tried the obvious. Cut prices. Cut margins. Shuffled the product range. Nothing moved. His reviews were good. His stores were on the map. On paper, everything looked right.

I asked him one question. What is stopping you from growing?

He said, the big players. Carrefour, Lulu. They have scale. I cannot fight them on scale.

“The problem is not your size. It is your shift. You are still waiting for the customer to walk in. Everyone else is already walking to their door.”

Then I said quietly, if Carrefour can deliver, why not you? Carrefour delivers across the city. You do not need to deliver across the city. You just need to deliver ten steps down the road. Five kilometres. Ten kilometres. Your own neighbourhood.

He put his hand on his forehead. Oh my God. I was only thinking about how I would manage a huge fleet of delivery riders. I never thought, I could deliver to the house ten steps from my store.

The next day, we designed it. Five to ten local delivery people per store. Bicycles. No fleet. No overhead. Just neighbours delivering to neighbours.

Then the second thing. Nobody in his neighbourhood knew he was delivering. So we made sure everyone within his catchment did know. Google, maps, community groups. Nothing loud. Just present.

“Once you clear the pipe, growth becomes a by-product.”

If you are a founder somewhere thinking “the big players are killing me”, I promise you, you are wrong. It is not the big players. It is the shift you have not made yet.
